Once again, they were a joy to photograph and their happiness at being married was infectious– we couldn’t help but smile all night. We love that they started dating in middle school, that they are so warm and down to earth, and that Connie is absolutely brilliant (well, they both are, but she is just about to start medical school)! These two have great things in store for them, as they head east to Boston to start the next chapter of their lives… Congratulations, Connie and Matthew!

Clint and Bianca’s Palm Springs Wedding Photography

We shot a gorgeous wedding and a gorgeous couple in Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells recently. The ceremony was at an elegant private residence in Rancho Mirage, with a reception at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in Indian Wells. With music as a mutual love, Clint and Bianca met through their common musical background. It was so fitting that the bride and groom, family, and friends sang and played music during the reception. Here are some of our favorite photos from their wedding.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk Wedding Photographers

The Santa Cruz boardwalk can be unbelievably busy on a warm weekend summer day. So busy, actually, that it can take over an hour and a half to drive down a quarter mile stretch of one-way street to find out that there is no parking to be had anywhere near the area. This is what we (and the groom!) found upon arrival for a wedding at Cocoanut Grove on a recent Saturday. A little frightening on your wedding day, but the bride and groom were so easy going and completely took it in stride. Actually, they seem to be up for almost anything, given that a few days after their wedding, they were moving across the country (but were still more relaxed than most on their big day). We had so much fun photographing them!

Kate and Alan’s Hawaii Wedding Photography

A warm and sunny day on a Hawaii beach with a ceremony overlooking Oahu’s beautiful North Shore at sunset make an ideal backdrop for a wedding – and Kate and Alan, a couple as sweet, generous, and fun as anyone can find, made it even more perfect.

Kate and Alan opened their doors for their family and friends to extend the celebration for nearly a week, leading hikes and trips to the beach with their dog Daisy and giving everyone the local and stunning view of Oahu.

The outdoor wedding ceremony overlooked the ocean at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu’s breezy North shore – an area famous for Pipeline and it’s big wave surfing in the winter. The day was true Hawaii-style – a casual ceremony with flip-flops (or bare feet) and Hawaiian shirts, and a loose schedule with as much time as possible spent with family and friends – which made for an amazing wedding experience. It was impossible not to get caught up in the infectious happiness and love of Kate and Alan and the warmth of their family and friends, as they celebrated the start of a new life together.

We love you Kate and Alan, and we couldn’t be happier for you. Congratulations to you both, and hopefully we can fly back to Hawaii often to join you for red velvet pancakes, cocktails on the beach, and some surfing.

Jana and Josh’s Wedding Photography

Tears of joy trickled down her face as she read her vows to her husband-to-be, and he leaned forward and gently wiped them away, before taking her hands in his and looking into her eyes as she finished…. It was such a quiet and sweet moment, but one that said so much about the love, happiness, and respect between the Jana and Josh.

They chose their wedding date because historically it hadn’t rained on April 16 for the past 10 years. Their faith in history paid off, as the day turned out to be a perfect southern California day, warmer than it had been in many months. The weather that evening was even more comfortable, keeping most of the guests at the outdoor reception to celebrate and to dance late into the night. With such a perfect start to the next part of their lives together, we’re sure there are great things to come for these two (not that we had any doubts)!

We’ve gotten to know Jana and Josh over the past few months, and just love them. Most of the couples we photograph are very happy to be married, but Jana and Josh were ecstatic. They were clearly so happy to have found one another, which made everyone around them (us included) so happy. We loved capturing this sincere warmth and excitement that was apparent throughout the entire wedding day, from the eager anticipation and inquiries about each other in the morning, to how tenderly they laughed with, cried with, and supported one another during the rest of the day.

They got married and celebrated at two gorgeous private residences in Yorba Linda and Anaheim Hills in Orange County, one on a hilltop overlooking the city below, while another under a night sky, and a beautiful hanging crystal chandelier over the outdoor dance floor….

We must also mention that Lacey Brickley and Heather Doddridge of An Unforgettable Day did a beautiful job coordinating the event, and it was captured so well in cinematic video by Jason Garner of Crescent Bay Films. They were all so easy to work with!

Megan and Zach’s Wedding Photography

We were so happy to photograph this beautiful couple’s wedding day recently at Black Gold Golf Club in Yorba Linda, California (Orange County). We photographed Megan and Zach’s engagement shoot in December during a period of unseasonably cold and rainy weather (for California). After the four of us left the shoot with our teeth chattering, we hoped they would have warmer weather on their wedding day. Luckily, their wedding took place recently on one of the warmest, most beautiful February days one could ask for…

We love that Megan and Zach are young, but so composed; that they knew from the beginning that they were right for each other; that Zach romantically proposed to Megan on a gondola ride on her birthday; that they were so confident, happy, and comfortable on their wedding day — even just before heading down the aisle. And we loved that at the end of the night, when all of their guests were ready to head home to bed, Megan and Zach seemed to have plenty of energy to catch an overnight flight to Jamaica for their honeymoon. We suppose the lure of turquoise waters and perfect white sand beaches might be enough to stay awake for…..

Congratulations Megan and Zach! We’re so happy for you both.

Why You Should Consider Seeing Your Groom Before the Wedding Ceremony

In ancient times, arranged marriages and dowries were the norm and couples often didn’t meet before the wedding ceremony. Hiding the bride from the groom before the ceremony and veiling her, likely became a tradition out of a fear that the groom might bolt if he found her unattractive. If he wasn’t able to see her until he lifted her veil at the ceremony, it would be too late then to refuse her.

The likely origin of this tradition might be worth considering when deciding whether or not to see one another before the ceremony. While both choices lead to beautiful and unique images, we often find that bringing the bride and groom together for a quiet, intimate, and more private meeting before the ceremony creates more emotional pictures than if they see one another for the first time as the bride walks down the aisle. We also find that bringing the bride and groom together to photograph many of their posed pictures before the ceremony means a much more relaxed and comfortable day, freeing up more time after the ceremony to slow down and celebrate the day with loved ones. However, the time of day of the wedding should also be considered, as late afternoon/evening light (4 pm or so in the winter and around 6 pm in the summer) is often the preferred time for many of the posed pictures of the bride and groom alone. If a wedding is in the early to mid afternoon, it might make sense to schedule time for some pictures before the ceremony, but the majority of pictures should still probably be completed afterwards.
